Riding a Bicycle 

  • Bicycle insurance is mandatory in Oita Prefecture. 
  • You must not ride a bicycle after drinking alcohol.
  • Only one rider is allowed per bicycle. 
  • You are not allowed to ride side by side with another cyclist. 
  • Using an umbrella while cycling is prohibited. 
  • Using a phone while cycling is prohibited. 
  • You must turn on your lights at night or when it is dark. 
  • Wear a helmet for your own safety.

Driving a Car or Riding a Motorcycle

You can only operate a vehicle in Japan if you have any of the following.

  • Driver's license issued in Japan
  • International Driving Permit (IDP)
  • Foreign driver's license and its Japanese translation
    Must be issued by a country or state that has a reciprocity agreement with Japan.

What to do when you get into a traffic accident

  1. Pull over your vehicle to a safe place.
  2. If anyone is injured, call 119 for an ambulance. Then dial 110 to report the accident to the police.
  3. See a doctor.
  4. Obtain a Traffic Accident Certificate at Japan Safe Driving Center
