Oita City has produced many original goods
capturing the local spirit, including
a series of "Oita Neckties,"
the Tatsuo Takayama Jigsaw Puzzle, the
"Oita shichifuku" keyholder
collection, Arata Isozaki t-shirts, and
picture postcards. One of these goods,
the necktie collection, has saw sales
reach 4,700 between its debut in October
1996 and July 1997. Necktie designs include
"Mt. Takasaki Monkeys," "Rakko
(the popular sea otter at Marine Palace)",
and "Blowfish."

Oita City Neckties

Oita City is now promoting a line of local
goods, with themes such as history, culture,
and local products, emphasizing the increasing
appeal and liveliness of the region. The
city's latest undertaking is a line of
neckties by the prominent Japanese artist
Tatsuo Takayama. Mr. Takayama's series
of neckties include five separate motifs:
"Young Girl in Black," "White
Melon," "Sound of Mountain,"
Abundant Mountains, Abundant Waters,"
and "On a Chair." Another product
associated with the artist Tatsuo Takayama
is a jigsaw puzzle entitled "Young
Girl."

Additionally, T-shirts
and postcards featuring prints of "Art Plaza"
museum, designed by world-renowned architect and
Oita native Arata Isozaki, and a series of key
holders are available.

Oita's "shichi fuku"
|
There
are seven unique keyholders, the series
being called "Oita shichi fuku,"
"shichi" meaning "seven"
and "fuku" meaning both
"luck" and "blowfish
(blowfish is actually "fugu";
pronunciation rules are bent to make
aplay on words)."
